Intel Highlights the Next Stage in Mobile Tech: MIDs

Intel gave a presentation outlining an impressive goal for Moblin, their Linux-based mobile platform. Intel also had a couple other announcements that involved new Atom processors and the growing market for MIDs, or Mobile Internet Devices.

At IDF this week, Intel announced two new Atom processors. One was the Z550, which can hit 2GHz while staying at or below a 3 watt power envelope. Intel also dropped hints that the Larrabee GPU, a discrete graphics product, may be out earlier than expected. The press release said the first round is due out at the end of 2009, early 2010.

The more exciting aspects of Intel's announcement that they are trying to give Moblin a 2-second boot time and a brand new technology powered by Intel's new Moorestown MID chip. We get awfully excited about short boot times, so we really hope Intel makes this happen.

This platform would work especially well in embedded car computers and the like which need the information readily available. Intel also showed off a BYD product called Mars, a MID running the Moorestown chip. It literally was a tiny netbook or rather large smartphone that was running a full Windows XP OS and had a phone interface on the back. One of the cool parts of the presentation was when Intel showed that PC gaming could be available in your pocket. Oh wow.

Here's an excerpt from the presentation, see for yourself just how impressive some of this stuff is.

Hopefully we won't have to wait too long before Moblin and the new chips are available. Until then, we suppose you can check out both the netbook and smartphone sites to see which two units you'd like to see combined into one device.
