First Impressions on MiFi: Mobile Hotspot
Novatel has been talking about their mobile hotspot for a while, so we were excited to get our hands on it and try it out at CTIA. Our first impressions: yeah it's just another way to access wireless, makes it a little more convenient, looks nice and, honestly, we want one. Specs and details after the break. Finally, no more being tethered to Burger King or McDonald's to get wireless. No more tying up a USB port to get wireless. Enter the MiFi mobile hotspot. A self-proclaimed intelligent mobile hotspot, it provides access for more than one user, doesn't use an external modem (works where cellular connections are available) and can share connectivity with multiple devices.
It looks nice. Plain silver, it's about the size of a credit card, only three times as thick. It just looked smooth and it ran that way too. When we were testing it out the connection never seemed to lag. We even carried it around a little and it worked well beyond the specced 30 feet. The specs say it works up to 30 feet, so we won't contradict it, but we do realize how rare it is that something may actually be better than the advertised specs.
No release date yet, but we're excited about it. Keep up with other news from CTIA with our other TopTenREVIEWS blog posts:
